PHOENIX — Tesla has started the process to launch self-driving rideshare services in the Phoenix metro area.
Officials from Tesla contacted the Arizona Department of Transportation on June 26 to begin the certification process, an ADOT spokesperson confirmed.
Tesla has applied to test self-driving cars both with and without a driver in the vehicle. A decision on those is expected at the end of the month.
If they are certified by ADOT, they will then have to complete a self-certification process.
If Tesla chooses to operate ride-share services as a Transportation Network Company (TNC) like Lyft, Uber, Waymo, etc., they will need to follow the permitting process.
